Required Auto Insurance in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. requires all drivers to have liability insurance for both property damage and bodily injury, which pays for any damage or injuries caused by an accident in which you were at fault. D.C. requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
  • Property Damage: $10,000 per accident.
  • Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
  • Uninsured Motorist Property Damage: $5,000 per accident with a $200 deductible.

Washington, D.C. Teen Drivers

Washington, D.C. operates under a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) Law, which includes three stages: Learner’s Permit, Provisional License, and Unrestricted License. 

  • Learner’s Permit: At 16, teens can obtain a learner’s permit after passing a written exam. A learner’s permit allows teens to drive with a parent, legal guardian, or licensed driver over 21. Driving is limited to between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM.
  • Provisional License:  At 17, teen drivers can obtain a provisional license after holding a learner's permit for 6 months and passing a road skills exam. With a provisional license, teen drivers may operate a vehicle with no more than 2 passengers that are under 21. 
  • Unrestricted License: To obtain an unrestricted license, drivers must be at least 17 years old, have had their provisional license for 12 months without any violations, and complete 10 hours of night driving. Applicants who are 18 years old may apply immediately for a full license.
