Florida Teen Driving Laws

Florida operates under a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) Law, which includes three stages: Learner’s License, Restricted License, and Unrestricted License.

  • Learner’s Permit: At 15, teens can obtain a learner’s license after passing a written exam and completing a driver's education course. A learner’s permit allows teens to drive during the day with a parent, legal guardian, licensed driver over 21, or a certified driving instructor.
  • Restricted License: Teen drivers can obtain a restricted license after holding a learner's permit for 12 months, passing a driving exam, and completing 50 hours of supervised driving. With a restricted license, teen drivers cannot drive at night
  • Unrestricted License: At 18, all license restrictions are lifted.

Please be aware of additional restrictions for teen drivers in Florida.
