Required Auto Insurance in Indiana

Indiana requires all drivers to have liability insurance for both property damage and bodily injury, which pays for any damage or injuries caused by an accident in which you were at fault. Indiana requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
  • Property Damage: $15,000 per accident.

Indiana Teen Driving Laws

At 15, Indiana teens may obtain a learner's permit before applying for their provisional driver's license. Teen drivers with a permit must complete the following requirements to be eligible for a driver's license: 

  • Driver's Education Program: Teens must complete a driver's education course if they are under 16-years and 90-days old. If over, they are not required to take an education course.
  • Driving practice: Teen drivers must log 50 hours of driving practice to receive their license, with 10 of those hours being at nighttime. 
  • Exams: To receive an Indiana driver's license, teen drivers must also pass a vision and road test.
