Required Auto Insurance in Maryland

Maryland requires all drivers to have liability insurance for both property damage and bodily injury, which pays for any damage or injuries caused by an accident in which you were at fault. Maryland requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident.
  • Property Damage: $15,000 per accident.
  • Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury: $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident.

Maryland Teen Driving Laws

Maryland operates under a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) program, which includes three stages: Learner's Permit, Provisional License, and Full License.

  • Learner's Permit: At 15 years and 9 months old, teens can obtain an instructional permit after passing a knowledge exam. A learner's permit allows teens to drive with a parent, legal guardian, licensed driver over 21, or a certified driving instructor.
  • Provisional License At 16 years and 9 months old, teen drivers may apply for their Provisional license after completing the required 60 hours of driving practice, finishing an education course, and passing a road skills exam. With a provisional license, teens cannot drive unsupervised between midnight and 5:00 AM.
  • Full License: At 18, drivers may obtain their full, unrestricted license, provided that the driver had no traffic violations during the previous 12 months.

Please be aware of additional restrictions for teen drivers in Maryland.
