California Auto Insurance Coverage

With its endless beaches and sunny weather, there's a lot to love about California. But whether driving through the busy streets of Los Angeles or heading north on Pacific Coast Highway, it's essential to understand the Golden State's auto insurance requirements.

Required Auto Insurance in California

California requires all drivers to have liability insurance for both property damage and bodily injury, which pays for any damage or injuries caused by an accident in which you were at fault. California requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident.
  • Property Damage: $5,000 per accident.

California Teen Driving Laws

California operates under a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) program, which includes three stages: Instructional Permit, Provisional Driver's License, and Full Driver's License.

  • Instructional Permit: At 15 and a half, teens can obtain an Instructional Permit after passing a written exam and enrolling in a driver's education course. An Instructional Permit allows teens to drive with a parent, legal guardian, or certified driving instructor. Teens must complete 50 hours of supervised driving (10 hours at night) in order to move on to the next stage.
  • Provisional Driver's License: Teen drivers can obtain a Provisional License after holding an Instructional Permit for 6 months and passing a behind-the-wheel driving test. With a Provisional License, teens cannot drive between 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM.
  • Driver's License: At 18, all driving restrictions are lifted and teens may obtain their full Driver's License.

Please be aware of additional restrictions for teen drivers in California.
