Idaho Teen Driving Laws

Idaho operates under a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) program, which includes two stages: Supervised Instructional Permit and Full Driver's License.

  • Supervised Instructional Permit: At 15, teens may obtain their supervised instructional permit. To obtain their permit, teen drivers must complete a state-approved driver ed course. An instructional permit allows teens to practice driving with a licensed driver at least 21 years of age.
  • Behind-The-Wheel Training: After obtaining their supervised instructional permit, teens must complete 50 hours of driving, with 10 hours being at night, in order to be eligible for their full license.
  • Written Knowledge and Road Skills Test: To obtain their full license, teen drivers will also need to pass a written knowledge and road skills exam after completing 50 hours of driving practice.

Please be aware of additional driving restrictions for teen drivers in Idaho.
