Required Auto Insurance in Kentucky

Kentucky requires all drivers to have liability insurance for both property damage and bodily injury, which pays for any damage or injuries caused by an accident in which you were at fault. Kentucky requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.

Kentucky Teen Driving Laws

Kentucky operates under a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) program, which includes three phases: Permit Phase, Intermediate License Phase, and Full License Phase.

  • Permit Phase: At 16, teens can obtain an instructional permit after passing a written and vision exam. An instructional permit allows teens to drive with a parent, legal guardian, licensed driver over 21, or a certified driving instructor. Permit holders under 18 must complete 60 hours of driving practice, with 10 hours at night.
  • Intermediate License Phase: Teen drivers may apply for their intermediate license after holding their permit for 180 days and passing a driving skills test. With an intermediate driver's license, teens may not drive between the hours of 12:00 AM and 6:00 AM.
  • Full License Phase: After completing a driver's education course and holding their intermediate license for 180 days, drivers may obtain their full "under 21" driver's license.

Please be aware of additional restrictions for teen drivers in Kentucky.
